Here is how the proposed Île-des-Chênes Data Centre can support Manitoba's technology future

Consensus Core is in the early stages of proposing to build an AI-ready data centre campus that would power the applications and services driving the future of Canada's digital economy and we look forward to continuing to work with government officials as well as engaging the local community to bring this project to reality.

We are endeavoring to build a data centre that does more than power AI, but one that will also create a positive impact for Île-des-Chênes and Manitoba by hiring locally, investing in local infrastructure and power, and establishing the province as a hub for advanced technology that keeps Canadian data and innovation within Canada.

We are working to build the infrastructure for Canada's AI future, and the Île-des-Chênes Data Centre is part of that vision, enabling Canadian enterprises and researchers to deploy the computing power they need on sovereign infrastructure.

We are committed to being a long-term partner in the Île-des-Chênes community and working collaboratively with municipal, provincial, and federal governments to ensure our proposed facility delivers maximum benefit for the community and Canada's economy as a whole. Here are some of the ways Consensus Core is seeking to support Manitoba.

Supporting Canada's AI Sovereignty

AI has become central to Canada's economic competitiveness. Both the federal and provincial governments are leading in advancing Canada’s AI capacity. We commend them for recognizing that access to advanced computing infrastructure is essential to avoiding reliance on foreign infrastructure, creating jobs, supporting research, and growing the economy.

The Île-des-Chênes Data Centre would directly support these national and provincial goals by providing GPU-accelerated computing infrastructure operated in Canada for Canadian customers. Our proposed facility aligns with federal programs supporting AI infrastructure development and digital sovereignty, while supporting Manitoba's economic diversification and technology sector employment goals.

OUR COMMITMENT

Community impact

From these early stages, we are committed to supporting the community through sourcing labour and materials locally, partnering with regional suppliers, and building lasting relationships with Manitoba businesses and educational institutions wherever possible. Our key priority is working closely with the community and all levels of government, including Île-des-Chênes and the Municipality of Ritchot, on infrastructure planning and community integration throughout this process, understanding that our success and future growth depend on being a positive community partner.

Consensus Core is proud to call Manitoba home

We're committed to being a positive presence and investing in the long-term vitality of Île-des-Chênes and the surrounding community, while supporting Canada's broader goals of AI sovereignty and economic competitiveness.

FAQ

What is being proposed at the Île-des-Chênes site?

Consensus Core has proposed a major investment in Manitoba for the creation of an AI-ready data centre campus co-located with a natural gas-fired power generation plant at the Île-des-Chênes site.

What is a data centre?

Data centres are the foundation for artificial intelligence and compute-intensive applications: from machine learning models that help businesses make better decisions, to research computing that advances science and medicine.

How will the project benefit Île-des-Chênes?

If approved, the project would create a made-in-Manitoba world-class data centre, create new, well-paying jobs, support local tradespeople and businesses, and also add new local electricity generation to the provincial grid, reducing Manitoba’s reliance on imported power and improving power stability for the local community.

Where is the project in the approvals process?

The project is in a preliminary stage and Consensus Core looks forward to continuing to work with the province, local government, community members, and other stakeholders.

Will the proposed facility reduce or compete with the existing water supply available to the local community?

Our facility would use modern closed-loop liquid cooling systems, meaning there would be zero net water usage from operations.

Will the proposed facility burn natural gas on-site and if so, how will Consensus Core mitigate impacts on the environment?

Our facility would use state-of-the-art natural gas technology which is one of the cleanest uses of fossil fuels currently available. As the project progresses, Consensus Core is committed to exploring all available carbon mitigation solutions to further reduce our carbon output as much as possible.

How can the community get involved or share feedback?

We are early on in the process and there will be opportunities to get involved, but for now please reach out to us at manitoba@consensuscore.com or check back here soon – we will be updating the FAQ section as we get more questions.
